Biden considers draining depleted U.S. weapons stockpile for Ukraine

President Joe Biden may send more American weapons and ammunition to Ukraine, even though Congress is stalling additional funding to replace them, according to reports.

The Pentagon has not made a final decision, but officials are considering the idea as another way to support Ukraine despite the potential political pitfalls for the Biden administration.

Depleting American stockpiles in order to support Ukraine would anger many Republicans who believe Biden has to prioritize the defense of the United States first. Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., who serves at chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, told the New York Times that the idea was 'on the table.

The Defense Department has around $4 billion authorized to send Ukraine from its own stockpiles, according to CNN , but that the Pentagon remains reluctant to use them without reassurance that they will get replaced.

In April 2022, U.S. stocks of Javelin anti-tank missiles and Stinger anti-aircraft missiles had been depleted by a third, leaving the Pentagon scrambling to replenish them.

The Pentagon already warned in September that the replenishment of U.S. stockpiles was slowing due to reluctance from House Republicans to pass more aid for Ukraine.

Earlier this month, Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Karsten Heckl raised concerns of the armed service's ability to replenish stockpiles while assisting Ukraine.

The Senate passed a $95 billion foreign aid package earlier this month which includes $60 billion for Ukraine. But Republican Speaker Mike Johnson (pictured) remains reluctant to bring it to the floor, citing the need for President Biden to confront the crisis on the southern border first.

Biden continues to reassure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that the United States will ultimately provide him the aid and munitions that he needs to defend his country from Russia.

'I'm going to fight until we get them the ammunition they need and the capacity they need to defend themselves,' Biden said during a White House speech last week.

Российские военные привлекли китайские гольф-кары Desertcross для штурма украинских позиций на лиманском направлении.

Ukrainian MiG-29 debuts French AASM Hammer bomb targeting Russian forces

The first photo of a mysterious Ukrainian MiG-29 equipped with the French AASM Hammer bomb has surfaced online, confirming that Ukraine's military has started targeting Russian positions with the Hammer, a weapon with noteworthy capabilities.

"This is the first photo of the MiG-29 of the Ukrainian armed forces equipped with a French guided bomb," reports the Ukrainian portal Defense Express. The publication examined the integration of the French bomb into the Ukrainian forces' arsenal and explored whether the new ammunition necessitated significant modifications to the aircraft. Besides the guided bomb on the suspended pylon, the MiG was also equipped with a fuel tank but carried no additional load.

Defense Express points out that the aircraft seen in the photo with the weapon indeed appears similar to the MiG-29 with mysterious pylons modified for unspecified armaments. It was discovered that these modifications were mounts prepared for carrying American JDAM/ER weapons. Based on this, it seems the adaptation of the MiG-29s for the Hammer bomb did not require complex changes compared to the setup for JDAM/ER.

It is important to remember that France announced the delivery of AASM Hammer aerial bombs to Ukraine at the beginning of 2024, with about 600 bombs to be delivered over the course of the year. The first documented use of the Hammer was observed in March.

The French weapon shares similarities with its American counterpart
The AASM Hammer (Armement Air-Sol Modulaire - Highly Agile Modular Munition Extended Range) is quite similar in functionality to the American JDAM/ER. The French system is designed for integration with standard Mk 82/83/84 bombs, which weigh approximately 225, 450, and 900 kg (about 496, 992, and 1984 lbs, respectively).

Unlike the American system, the French variant boasts not only a guidance head and foldable wings but also a rocket engine, making it a significant advancement. This enhancement allows the bomb to be deployed towards its target even from low-altitude flights, easily covering a range of about 9 miles. Additionally, it presents a major benefit in terms of radar evasion thanks to the radar horizon.

Moreover, the AASM Hammer is versatile, being compatible with various guidance heads. The standard version, which uses inertial and satellite navigation, achieves shooting accuracy within a few meters. However, other versions of the guidance system are even more precise, offering accuracy up to one meter.

Sibir Battalion reports losses of russia after raids in Belgorod and Kursk Regions

Russian volunteers from the Sibir Battalion (Siberian Battalion, fighting on the side of the Armed Forces of Ukraine) on their Telegram channel published losses of russian troops in the Kursk and Belgorod Regions from March 12 to 18.
"The enemy suffered huge losses in manpower and equipment. But the biggest damage was the image of Putin as a figure who can allegedly keep the situation in the country under control," the Sibir Battalion said in a statement.

In total, from March 12 to 18, the losses of the russian army in the border areas amounted to: 613 killed, 829 wounded, another 27 people were captured.

Seven tanks, 20 IFVs, six D-30 howitzers, four APCs, four mortars, two Rapira anti-tank guns, two Msta-S self-propelled artillery installations, two Zala drones, one Grad rocket system, one Murom surveillance complex, one anti-tank grenade launcher, one electronic warfare station, one repeater, two armored vehicles, two excavators, and 57 cars were destroyed.

На территории России продолжается рейд Российского добровольческого корпуса, легиона "Свобода России" и Сибирского батальона. В одном из формирований заявили, что удар по Белгороду нанесли в ответ на циничный обстрел Киева ракетами.

Боец легиона "Свобода России" Алексей Барановский во время пресс-конференции заявил, что ударом по Белгороду российские добровольцы ответили за атаку на Киев. К слову, Россия в ночь на 21 марта массированно атаковала украинскую столицу.

По словам бойца, в результате утренней атаки по военному объекту в Белгороде девять военнослужащих России были ликвидированы.

Также были уничтожены еще пять членов так называемых "добровольческих формирований".

В то же время в Белгороде объявляли тревогу всего на 20 минут. Там прозвучало несколько взрывов. Российские телеграмм-каналы распространяли последствия утренней атаки. Так, на опубликованных кадрах зафиксированы повреждения зданий в нескольких районах Белгорода. В частности, стекла повыбивало в "Белгород Арене".

Между тем в минобороны России заявили, что над Белгородской областью уничтожили 10 снарядов из ракетной установки залпового огня Vampire.

Главное управление разведки Министерства обороны Украины способствует деятельности российских добровольческих формирований на территории России, которые ведут борьбу против путинского режима, заявил представитель ГУР Андрей Юсов.

Он пояснил, что они пришли помочь украинцам освободиться от российских оккупантов и мужественно и героически себя проявляют на многих участках фронта, непосредственное участие принимают в серьезных операциях.

Macron weighs five scenarios for NATO troop deployment in Ukraine

"It is not excluded that they will end up in liberated areas, for example, on the Belarusian border, in Kherson or Kharkiv," said Nicolas Tenzer, a Sciences Po Paris university lecturer.

The fifth scenario, deemed the least realistic by journalists, involves the direct participation of French troops in "trench warfare."
Participation of French troops in combat against the Russian army would be "equivalent to declaring war on Russia," the publication said.

Macron's statement on sending troops to Ukraine

Ukraine's Western allies could create a coalition to provide the Ukrainian Armed Forces with long-range weapons, and future Western troop deployment to Ukraine should not be ruled out, Macron said after a conference in support of Ukraine held in Paris on Feb. 26

Several NATO countries publicly rejected the idea of sending troops to Ukraine in response to Macron's statements, including Poland, the United States, Germany, Czechia, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas and Lithuanian Defense Minister Arvydas Anušauskas did not reject the possibility of sending NATO troops, adding that their troops would only be used on a training mission.

"All options should be kept open," Dutch Army Defense Chief, General Onno Eichelsheim, said.

European NATO member states have been studying the possibility of sending NATO troops to Ukraine for weeks, the AFP news agency reported, citing a source.

French troops could help Ukraine protect certain borders, and take part in exercises or ground air defense, French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said on Feb. 29. He ruled out the participation of French soldiers in battles "directly on the front line."

Macron, speaking about sending Western troops to Ukraine, meant training missions for Ukrainian soldiers, Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, said.
