NATO Ally Responds to Rumors of Secret F-16 Combat Mission in Ukraine
Story by David Brennan • 4h

Two F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter aircraft are pictured over the Romanian 86th Air Base in Fetesti, Romania, on November 13, 2023. NATO allies are preparing to soon transfer the first batch of F-16s to Ukraine.

ЦитатаNATO ally Romania has dismissed an unverified report that an F-16 fighter aircraft took off from a base in the country to bomb Russian forces in occupied southern Ukraine, as the approaching transfer of dozens of the American-made fighter jets to Kyiv prompts mounting speculation and rumor.

The Ukraine Front Lines X--formerly known as Twitter--account appears to be the source of the latest false claim regarding the F-16s, which are being prepared to be sent to Ukraine by NATO nations to help Kyiv bolster its air force.

Ukraine Front Lines reported, without providing any evidence, that Russia's General Staff of the Armed Forces reported to the Security Council of Russia that an F-16C operating out of a Romanian air force base close to the Black Sea port city of Constanța "carried out an air strike" on a Russian troop concentration in the partially-occupied southern Ukrainian Kherson region.

"They were very frightened in Moscow," the account claimed. "While there is no possibility to locate F-16 at bases yet in Ukraine, ready-made bases and ground personnel of allies are used."

Newsweek has contacted the Russian Defense Ministry by email to request comment.

The Romanian Defense Ministry quickly disputed the report on its X account.

"We are alerting you to fake news that appeared on an account from the X platform, which claims that an F-16C aircraft took off from the 86th Air Base in Constanța on Saturday and bombed, at 03:22, a group of forces of the Russian Federation near Kherson," the ministry wrote.

Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson Yurii Ihnat also told Newsweek early on Tuesday that the report was false.
There has been no evidence that F-16s are yet operating in Ukrainian skies, nor even that the first batches of the aircraft have arrived on Ukrainian soil.

Speculation, though, has been rife, especially amid the shooting down of several Russian aircraft over frontline areas in recent months. Experts told Newsweek earlier this month that Ukraine's use of a mobile Patriot surface-to-air missile battery is a more likely explanation.

As with other Western-provided weapons systems, Kyiv and its partners may wish to conceal the arrival of the F-16s to ensure an element of surprise when they are first used against Russian forces. Daniel Rice, a former special adviser to Ukraine's commander-in-chief General Valery Zaluzhnyi, told Newsweek in December: "Russian forces should learn 'the hard way' when Ukraine fields a new weapon."

Ukrainian pilots and ground crews are still undergoing training abroad on the platform under the guidance of a multinational NATO coalition. The first F-16 fighters are expected to be transferred to Ukrainian control in the coming weeks or months.

Ukraine launches massive Storm Shadow missile attack on Crimea
Story by Joe Barnes • 1h

British-built Storm Shadow missiles similar to these were used in the attack on Russian military targets in Crimea

Ukraine launched a massive missile barrage against four Russian military positions in occupied Crimea on Wednesday.

The head of Ukraine's air force praised a "cleansing of Crimea from the Russian presence". The Ukrainian air force's involvement indicated that British Storm Shadow missiles fired from Kyiv's jets were used in the raid.

It came a day after Ukrainian forces struck a radar station used by air defence systems in north-western Crimea.

Explosions and active surface-to-air interceptors were reported in the major port city of Sevastopol and the nearby military airfield of Belbek.

Footage of the strike at the Russian air base shared on social media appeared to show a huge plume of smoke rising into the sky. A second video showed another missile striking near the source of the smoke.

Lt Gen Mykola Oleshchuk, the head of Ukraine's air force, said: "Ukrainian aviators will definitely return home to their native airfield. And now I thank everyone who joined the cleansing of Crimea from the Russian presence."

The Russian ministry of defence claimed it had shot down a salvo of 20 Ukrainian missiles over the Black Sea and the occupied peninsula, which Moscow illegally annexed in 2014.

Fragments from downed missiles also crashed into a military unit in Lyubimovka, which is near the Belbek air base.

The Kremlin said there was no damage to any "aviation equipment" in its statement, while Crimea's Russian-installed governor said there had been no casualties as a result of the Ukrainian strikes.

The Telegraph was unable to verify either side's claims.

The missile attack came after one of Kyiv's most senior generals suggested it was poised to launch a renewed counter-offensive to dislodge Russian forces, which could come as soon as the "early spring".
"Some time in the early spring, Russia's offensive will be completely exhausted," Kyrylo Budanov, head of the HUR military intelligence agency, said on Ukrainian television.

"We make a move, the enemy makes a move. Now is the enemy's turn. It will end, and then ours will start," he added.

Ukraine claims its sea drones sank a Russian ship. Moscow says a Patriot missiles downed its plane
Story by By ILLIA NOVIKOV, Associated Press • 1h

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) -- Ukraine claimed Thursday it used sea drones to sink a Russian corvette in the Black Sea as Russian investigators alleged that a Russian military transport plane that crashed last month was brought down by two U.S.-made Patriot missiles fired by Kyiv's forces.

Ukraine's military intelligence agency, known by its Ukrainian acronym GUR, published a video it said showed naval drones assaulting the Russian missile-armed cutter Ivanovets on Wednesday night.

The footage released on GUR's social media purports to show multiple naval drones crashing into a vessel and exploding. According to GUR, the ship costing between $60-$70 million was on patrol on Lake Donuzlav in western Crimea, when a GUR special unit struck it. The lake has been more of a bay since 1961, when a channel connecting it to the Black Sea was dug out.

Disinformation has been part of the grinding war, which marks its second anniversary on Feb. 24, and it was not possible to independently verify either side's claims.

The private security firm Ambrey said Ukraine used up to six sea drones, each of which usually carry 300 kilograms (661 pounds) of explosives, in the attack. The GUR footage showed the ship was sinking.

Russian officials made no immediate comment on the Ivanovets.

Ukrainian attacks on Russian aircraft and ships in the Black Sea have helped push Moscow's naval forces back, allowing Kyiv to increase crucial exports of grain and other goods through its southern ports.

Ambrey, the security company, noted that any unexploded drones could be a threat for Black Sea shipping.

Meanwhile, Russia's Investigative Committee, the main state criminal investigation agency, said Thursday it deduced that the Russian Il-76 military transport plane that crashed near the border with Ukraine on Jan. 24 was downed using the U.S.-made Patriot air defense system, which Western allies have supplied to Kyiv.
Russian officials claimed there were 74 people on board, including 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war, six crew members and three Russian servicemen. All were reported killed.

The two missiles were fired by the Ukrainian military from near the village of Lyptsi in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine, it said.

The committee said in a statement that 116 fragments of two MIM-104A missiles that were fired from the Patriot system were found near the crash site in the Belgorod region. It produced no physical evidence for its claims.

Meanwhile, along the front line stretching across eastern and southern Ukraine, the fighting continued to claim civilian casualties.

In the eastern Donetsk region, the Russian army shelled 11 towns and villages, killing one person in the village of Tsukuryne on Thursday. In Toretsk, two people were wounded during a rocket attack, the Ukrainian presidential office said.

In the south, six civilians were wounded in the Kherson region, including a husband and wife in Beryslav who were hit by a drone attack while riding a motorcycle through the city.

Ukraine's Military to Receive Double Boost From NATO Allies
Story by Kaitlin Lewis  •
57m

Ukraine's military got a boost of more than $530 million from its NATO allies on Friday, thanks to two new aid packages announced by Finland and Norway.

Norway's government asked its parliament to sign off on sending Ukraine an additional 10 National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS) and four fire control centers, totaling around $326 million. The medium-range ground-based air defense system, which was developed in partnership between the Norwegian defense firm Kongsberg and U.S. defense company Raytheon, is designed to target aircraft, cruise missiles and drones.

The new defense package comes in addition to the $30.5 million NASAMS deal that Oslo pledged to Kyiv in December. The first set of Norway-provided NASAMS were pledged to Ukraine in March of last year. Ukraine has also received a handful of the systems from the United States and Lithuania.

"The Norwegian NASAMS system saves Ukrainian lives and prevents the destruction of buildings and infrastructure," Norweigian Defense Ministry Bjorn Gram said in a release Friday. "The Russian missile and drone attacks are extensive and brutal, so air defense is absolutely decisive for Ukraine."

The Finnish Ministry of Defense also announced a $205 million package for Ukraine on Friday. Details regarding the content of the deal, however, were not shared in order to "guarantee the safe delivery of the aid," the ministry said.

"Nationally and more broadly, new ways to support Ukraine in the long term must be found," Finland's Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen said.

The new package brings Finland's total defense aid for Ukraine to $1.9 billion, its ministry said Friday. As of October, Norway had committed $3.8 billion in defense funding to Ukraine, according to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy.

Newsweek reached out to Ukraine's defense ministry for comment via email on Friday.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a thank-you to his Finnish counterpart in a post to X, formerly Twitter, writing that Finland's "comprehensive and long-term support for Ukraine ... ensures our shared victory over the aggressor."

"I appreciate the implementation of our agreements, as well as President [Sauli] Niinisto's personal contribution to strengthening the Ukraine-Finland partnership," Zelensky added.

Ukraine's defense ministry also thanked Norway for the additional NASAMS package on X, adding, "Air defense systems are crucial to saving the lives of Ukrainians."

Ukraine's success in holding off Russia's invasion has heavily relied on support from its Western allies. The European Union and its member states have pledged $148.5 billion in aid--including military, financial and humanitarian assistance--since the start of the war in February 2022, according to data compiled by the Institute for the Study of War think tank.

At the end of 2023, total U.S. aid to Ukraine reached more than $79 billion. America's Department of Defense said in a release on Friday that $43 billion of that has included defense capabilities.

German parliament shifts stance on supplying TAURUS KEPD 350 missiles to Ukraine
Story by PJU

Initial discussions of Germany supplying Ukraine with powerful TAURUS KEPD 350 cruise missiles arose in the first half of 2023. However, a final decision was delayed due to hesitations amongst MPs from the SPD party, the dominant party in the current government.

Interestingly, the British attempted to circumvent this issue by offering larger quantities of Storm Shadow missiles in exchange for German missiles. The passing of Alexei Navalny appears to have influenced the SPD's support for supplying Ukraine with these much-needed missiles capable of striking deep within Russian territory.

TAURUS KEPD 350: Germany's bunker and bridge annihilator
The TAURUS KEPD 350, a cruise missile developed through a joint venture between Berlin and Stockholm, was initiated in the 1990s. During the 1980s, Germany undertook a search for a cruise missile, subsequently joining the French Apache missile program, which later evolved into the Storm Shadow.
Due to political reasons, Germany eventually withdrew from this program and opted to create its device with assistance from Sweden. The product of this collaboration is the TAURUS KEPD 350, which is short for Kinetic Energy Penetration Destroyer and was introduced in 2005.

The TAURUS KEPD 350 is a cruise missile capable of covering over 311 miles. It incorporates stealth technology for launch from aircraft and measures 16.4 ft in length, and weighs 3086 lbs, with the dual-function MEPHISTO (Multi-Effect Penetrator Highly Sophisticated and Target Optimised) warhead accounting for 1058 lbs.

This warhead can operate like a standard fragmentation warhead upon impact, explode in the air to scatter shrapnel over a large radius or delay its detonation. This mode of operation echoes the Storm Shadow, but the TAURUS KEPD 350 offers features not found in its competitors when attacking bunkers.
While setting a manual delay on other missiles is required based on target characteristics, with the TAURUS, one can choose the "detonate after overcoming the second obstacle" mode. The MEPHISTO warhead features sensors that detect obstacles and empty spaces, eliminating room for error and enhancing the effectiveness of the attack.

A turbojet engine ensures the missile's delivery to its target, providing a high subsonic speed (about 0.8-0.9 Ma) even at several dozen meters altitude. The missile also features a sophisticated guidance system that utilizes not only the common inertial and satellite navigation pair but also includes an optoelectronic head equipped with a fourth-generation IR sensor that detects the thermal image of the target, allowing for jamming.

This is used not only for guidance during the final flight phase and confirmation of successful target hits but also for terrain mapping, which is compared with a pre-loaded digital map. Implementing such a system is expensive, but it ensures the missile's operation in environments where GPS navigation is jammed or unavailable.

For the Ukrainians, this would be an invaluable resource enabling, among other things, the potential destruction of the Crimean Bridge. The likely launch vehicles for these missiles would be Su-24s, which already host the Storm Shadow.
